Status in Hong Kong
As a result of over-exploitation and depletion, Hong Kong has now become one of the very few and best remaining healthy wild Aquilaria Sinensis populations. Such healthy wild agarwood populations has however attracted illegal activities, such as unauthorized tree cutting in our country parks: A recent incident in Sha Tou Kwok where over a hundred 50-year-old agarwood trees were cut is a typical example of illegal exploitation. This results in a loss of billions of Hong Kong dollars in money worth, taking into account the commercial value of agarwood. From the environmental and conservation point of view, the loss is in no way recoverable. |
