Importance of Agarwood Conservation

The unbalanced demand and supply of agarwood worldwide has brought people to concern about the sustainability of agarwood supply in the future. Effective conservation management is urgently needed globally to protect species of agarwood such that our future generations would be able to enjoy the wonderful usage of agarwood which inherited from our ancestors thousands of years ago.

Agarwood has been listed under Appendix II of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), as well as a Wild Plant under state Protection (Category II) in China owing its decline in quantity. Agarwood has been illegally exploited because of its commercial values. Although the illegal exploitation has not yet threatened the overall survival of the Aquilaria Sinensis population in Hong Kong , larger scale of illegal exploitation will be inevitable as t he demand in agarwood is huge and people are heavily paid to take the risks. T he wild-grown species is over-exploited and depleted in many parts of China , leaving Hong Kong one of the best remaining healthy wild Aquilaria Sinensis populations.
